Kyoto is a very old, beautiful city. It is a perfect example of what I expected to see in Japan. The combination of ancient temples and parks along with the most modern of buildings and transportation systems. It seems to me that at least half of Kyoto is designated a world heritage site and/or national treasure.
Planet 9 Studios has put together a wonderful VRML tour of Kyoto. Their Virtual Kyoto site can be found at www.planet9.com/earth/kyoto/index.htm.
The Kinkaku, or Golden Pavilion, is a beautiful three-story pagoda-style building. The outside walls of the top two levels are covered with gold gilding. It's a truly remarkable sight which, unfortunately, can only be observed from across a beautiful lake.

Nijo-jo is a castle with an important history. For over 250 years of Japan's history, the country was run by the Tokugawa Shogunate. Nijo-jo was the center of this feudal military government. The castle was also used in 1867 for the signing of the documents which ended the feudal government and restored sovereignty to the Emperor. Besides the history of the castle, the beautiful architecture and surrounding gardens are equally impressive.
