Hokkaido is the northernmost of Japan's big islands. It is also quite unlike what most people expect to see in Japan. Most of Hokkaido is dominated by large open fields and farms. There are also large forests all over the island.
Hokkaido is where ramen was invented. The dish is taken very seriously there, served in several different styles. Some of the more popular preparations include corn, kelp and a large slab of butter.
Tomamu, a popular ski resort, is reached by a two hour train ride from Sapporo. The resort has at least seven hotels, including four towers which are over 30 floors high. Two of these towers contain only suites, each with a private jacuzzi. Tomamu was originally owned by Alpha Resort, which sold time-share ownership in the resort. The company has since gone bankrupt and the resort is now owned by various companies, including the local municipal government.
